Oh, to be Unitarian Universalist! Bill Maher was no doubt inspired by Stephen Colbert’s admiration for Unitarian Universalism’s insistence on the the worth and dignity of every person when he remarked that by election Tuesday Mitt Romney was likely to come out as a, “staunchly pro-gay Unitarian, who hates corporations, is proud of his Latino heritage and doesn’t want old white men telling him what he can’t do with his vagina.” Sounds like a likeable Mitt, anyway. Unitarian Universalism on the Colbert Report!

UUism on the Colbert Report Stephen Cobert brought his steely regard to bear on Unitarian Universalism in a segment about evangelical Christian minister Billy Graham  removing Mormonism from his list of “cults” after his endorsement of Mitt Romney. Colbert goes on to expound about other religious groups that Graham considered cults, including, “Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, the Unification Church, Unitarians, Spiritists, Scientologists, and others.” He sarcastically describes “the dangerous Unitarians” with rules “so loose that their three sacred texts are the Old Testament, the New Testament, and  Free to Be You and Me.” The clip where UUism was mentioned is available here.  Begin watching at around the 3 minute mark to get the full context of…

Vote on the Side of Love Winning Video

This year the Standing on the Side of Love campaign, the UUA’s interfaith social justice project to harness the power of love, sponsored a video contest which attracted some very powerful and meaningful expressions of love and courage.  This year’s winner is Elliot Cennamo, a young adult from Columbus, Ohio who attends the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbus.  More information about the contest and its winners is available here.
